Riama Maslan Sihombing is a teaching staff and in 2009 initiated the course of  “Children Book Design and Illustration”  at the Visual Communication Design, Faculty of Art and Design, Bandung Institute of Technology (DKV FSRD ITB). She received the Best Children Book Illustration award from Ikapi in 1991 for "Katak Hendak Menjadi Lembu" book, Grafiti Press publisher.

A mother of two daughters is a researcher and  her dissertation analyses visual narratives in the shift of mother’s  potrayal in Indonesian children book illustration from the years of 1973-2013. She also conducted a research on the mapping the concept of modern adaptation of Indonesian folklore through a visual language approach; children’s response to visual narration on the picture book with folklore theme illustrated by Drs. Suyadi (Pak Raden); senior citizen engagement program in reading picture book activities to improve children's reading comprehension and interest; and ABC's alphabet book experiment with a combination of Nusantara typography.

Currently a member of Litara Foundation, she often becomes a facilitator in developing children books illustration by participating  in Room to Read, Let's Read!, The Asia Foundation, and children's literacy communities and illustrators. In 2018, she was invited by Indonesian National Book Committee (Komite Buku Nasional Indonesia) to be one of the speakers in  Ilustrators Café – Bologna Book Fair. With the presentation titled “Tracing the History of Illustration and Design of Indonesian Children’s Books”.
