Earth Dance

Earth Dance, a translation of the novel TarianBumi (2000), is the story of four generations of Balinese women, centering on conflicts that arise between the demands of caste and personal desires. Narrator Ida AyuTelaga shows that Balinese women’s wish to be beautiful and find a highcaste husband. When headstrong Telaga defies her mother’s wishes and marries a commoner her emancipation is regarded as a move downwards. Behind the thick, glossy hair and golden complexion, lies a web of jealousy, derision and intrigue which causes Telaga to wonder: “Is this what it means to be a woman?” This novel, TarianBumi (Earth Dance), has also been translated into German and published in Germany under the tittle Erdentanz.
